Coach August Deets Memorial Scholarship
August Deets coached in Texas and Oklahoma (1974-2014) amassing an impressive 200+ wins and earning a spot in the Oklahoma Football Hall of Fame. His highly successful career was, no doubt, due to his unmatched work ethic for himself, his staff, and his players. He diligently studied the game seeking input from successful coaches from high school, college, and the NFL. August was totally dedicated to his career, more often than not, spending 90 hours a week during the season. He loved doing for others and supporting his players as they graduated and went on to either play in college, the NFL, or to begin their own coaching career. He was fiercely competitive in all things, especially football. He expected nothing less than the best from himself and others and settled for nothing less. He was a “straight shooter”. You never had to guess how he felt, he made it known to all. He’s a person you wanted on your side, and was definitely someone you could count on no matter if things were going well or not. August had a gift of getting the absolute most out of all his players and made them believe in themselves. Robert Nunn, a former longtime NFL coach once referred to August as the best motivator he’d ever seen and played for.
Our family has chosen to honor his life and memory in a way that would be pleasing to August by awarding each year a scholarship for $2,500 to an athlete from each of the schools where he was a head coach: Apache, Elgin, and Newcastle.
1) Compose a letter stating all the reasons why you deserve this $2,500 scholarship.
(The letter should be typed and at least 200 words and no more than 500. Do not include your name or families names in the letter.) No AI please.
The entries will be presented and read by a handpicked board who are all former players of his. These entries will be presented anonymously and chosen upon their merit. Good luck to you all!
